Chapter 10
âHow do we go about making me your familiar?â Ranwulf asked once they were back in his room inside the tall walls of Haltfurt.
He hadnât paused when Aurelia explained to him what she thought she had learned. He didnât even ask her what the vampire queen had done to her to turn her murderous.
She didnât ask him why he was willing to assassinate their leader, either.
They didnât have to discuss it. The vampire queen was evil.
âIâm not entirely certain how binding a familiar works,â she said. âI have the beginnings of the spell worked outâI took it from a spellbook.â
âTook it?â Ranwulf raised one eyebrow.
âMy own spellbook.â Now, anyway.
âIâve heard things about how warlocks get their familiars.â Ranwulfâs voice rumbled in his chest and she couldnât tell if it was an emotional response or a physical one.
âIâve heard those rumors, too.â They stood several feet away from each other and she had to fight not to shuffle her feet. âThere are always lies about where warlocks and witches get our power.â She tried to make her voice as matter-of-fact as possible, as adult-sounding as she could--but she feared her young age came through, anyway. âItâs titillating to think that we have some sort of sexual control over familiarsâbut as far as I know, the relationship is one of power-sharing.â
âPower-sharing?â
She nodded.
âBut I donât have any power,â Ranwulf said.
And that was where he was wrong. After all, the look Ranwulf gave her at that, full of fire, said that he had more magic than he knew. âI wouldnât be so sure about that,â she said.
âI guess you had better go ahead and start. Iâm not sure I want to be anyoneâs familiarâbut Iâm certain I donât want that vampire in control of us anymore.â
Aurelia nodded and closed her eyes, drawing her magic into her from the air, spinning it through her body and pulling it out again through her fingertips, where she wove it in an intricate, lacy pattern.
She whispered when she cast, and sometimes she didnât even know what she said. This time, she started with the incantation she had copied and then memorized. As far as she knew, they were nonsense wordsâbut as it turned out, they were meant to invoke a magic deeper than any she had worked with before.
Halfway through the spell, she lost track of what she was saying, the sounds running through her as she nodded and twisted and wove them together.
The next time she came to herself, she found herself spinning, dancing in circles around Ranwulf, weaving not just a shawl or a shroud from the spell, but an entire cocoon. She wrapped him in her magic, binding him to her closer and closer.
She closed her eyes, slipping back into the spell.
By the time she had pulled him so close to her with the magic that his body brushed against hers, she ached with a desire that was as much magical as it was physical.
Aurelia didnât have to speak. She relaxed against the rough-hewn rock wall of the room, tilting her head back and closing her eyes, letting out a slight sigh.
